Filming with a Michelin Star Chef

Imagine getting flown across the world to do what you love most in beautiful surroundings; this was a reality for one of our recent video production clients.

Meet Tom Brown, a Michelin star chef doing what he does best at his latest restaurant The Pearly Queen, then being invited to guest Chef at Shelter, a contemporary Wood Fired Middle Eastern & Mediterranean restaurant in Bali.

We worked with Tom via AKA agency, who were looking for a small, multi-skilled team able to deliver content which didn’t just show Tom “at work”, but told the story of him taking his skills across the world for an exclusive guest Chef at Shelter in Bali.

After chatting with AKA, it was clear that there were going to be some challenges to the project, but nothing our team couldn’t handle or didn’t have experience dealing with before.

Challenge #1; Timing

Fast turnaround times aren’t uncommon in the hospitality industry. Especially when you’re dealing with luxury clients and are dealing with the logistics of flying in-demand people from around the world.

This is why having a flexible approach and tight-knit, multi-skilled crew really comes into play.

A lot of the time, larger video production companies aren’t able to accommodate fast turnaround times as their systems and processes don’t allow them.

We can.

If we’re available for a specific date we will make it work and will get your end product to you on time so you can maximise it across your marketing channels.

Challenge #2; Minimising Guest Disruption

A common concern amongst those in the hospitality industry that we work with; especially when guest experience is paramount.

“How will this impact our guests?”

The Pearly Queen is a luxury restaurant serving high end clientele and it’s not uncommon for them to be fully booked; which means we could not be disrupting guest service.

And this is one thing we’re passionate about as a video production company - minimal disruptions.

The Pearly Queen or Tom and the team needed the restaurant back ready to serve a busy lunch service so we needed to film quality content fast and clear up so that their patrons weren’t left hungry.

Challenge #3; Continuity

An interesting challenge for this project was that we were working with another production company in Bali.

Because no two companies shoot the same, we needed to ensure that the narrative worked seamlessly from our footage to theirs to ensure that there wasn’t a disconnect between different assets.

The Big Idea

As ever, we were ready to turn challenges into opportunities. Here's how we worked our magic:

  1. We became their strategic partners

    • We didn't just listen to what AKA, Tom and Shelter wanted; we truly understood their goals and vision for promotional material. Working with leading luxury brands, only the best is expected and the level of service needed to be top-notch on a tight deadline.

    • Together, we crafted a filming strategy that aligned perfectly with their objectives.

  2. We maximised every frame:

    • Each shot was carefully planned to showcase Tom’s passion and talents in a visually appealing way.

    • We found creative ways to make the viewer already feel like they were in Tom’s kitchen encouraging them to book and be a part of this unique experience.

  3. We brought their message to life:

    • On set, we were able to create trust and confidence to aid Tom to do his thing on camera.

    • Behind the scenes, we problem-solved issues such as lack of space and time with ease, ensuring a smooth production process.
